Florida Keys for Katrina Relief Concert Featuring Bo Diddley

Musicians, artists, politicians and community volunteers persevered against the worst hurricane season in history to bring an outstanding event to the Florida Keys while raising funds for Ocean Springs MS, a town devastated by Hurricane Katrina. Islamorada declared Ocean Springs their sister city, planned a benefit concert and raised thousands of dollars before hurricane Wilma forced the third consecutive hurricane evacuation of the Keys and a postponement of the planned event.

Most of the artists scheduled to perform were able to come to the January 8 event which, this time, had picture perfect weather. For a five dollar donation, the audience enjoyed an all-day concert with headliners: Bo Diddley, Clarence Clemons and the Soul Providers of South Florida.

Founder's Park in Islamorada was the perfect venue for this family affair. In addition to the concert field there is a fishing jetty, sandy beach and dog park, where Jill Hayes organized a pet party.

The concept for the Florida Keys for Katrina relief was first proposed by backcountry guide Capt. Jimmy Lozar (pictured above playing harmonica) and soon gained enthusiastic support from Keys residents.
